Equality – Where Should Christians Stand on the Issue?

hrc-equality-sign1

The past couple of days I have read numerous posts online dealing with the current equality issue and I’ve even made a post or two of my own.  On my drive to work today I had the chance to think about it some more so I thought I’d give one more final thought on the subject matter.

I was driving to work and was listening to Casting Crowns.  The song “Jesus, Friend of Sinners” came on and I felt like that song was extremely relevant to some of the issues that we’re debating over.  The song lyric says, “Jesus, friend of sinners open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers.”  This is true.  As Christians, we are sometimes quick to judge.  Sometimes that can be purely out of self righteousness, but I think for the most part it comes from the passion we feel through our convictions as well as the love for our country as Bible believing Americans.

I also started to recall some stories from the Bible, and yes, they were from the New Testament.  I know that there are some people who have a problem with what Leviticus says about homosexuality.  So for the sake of argument, let’s leave that out and look at things from a different perspective.  Thinking about the stories from Jesus’ ministry here on Earth, I realized one thing.  Jesus was always around sinners.  I got to thinking about Jesus with the tax collector, Jesus with the woman at the well, Jesus with the thief on the cross.  Throughout the New Testament you see Him fellow-shipping with murders, thieves, prostitutes, adulterers, and probably everyone else you could think of.  This led me to one conclusion.  If Jesus were here today, where might we find Him? We’d more than likely find Him right smack dab in the middle of any one of these LGBT rallies.  But He wouldn’t be there protesting, He’d be there trying to fellowship.  He’d be talking with them, perhaps even taking them out to lunch or dinner.  And He’d be doing just what He was doing in all those stories we’d read, He’d be sharing the gospel with them.

There is one thing though that was evident in all of those stories.  After Jesus showed love and acceptance to these people and after He shared the truth of the gospel with them, He left them with a command, a sort of calling.  He’d tell them, “Go and sin no more.”  He’d tell them to turn from their sinful ways, or lifestyle, and follow Him and sin no more.  This is a perfect model that He left for us to follow.  He was a true example of how you can love and accept someone without condoning their sins.  It showed love, acceptance, and ultimately forgiveness.

When Jesus left this Earth He gave us a command.  This was to go out into the world and share the gospel with everyone.  We are called to be His disciples.  He left us with the perfect example of how to do this.  We are to love and accept people, to forgive them.  However, we are also to share the truth of the gospel.  We are to judge the sin, but not the sinner.  We are to share with people the truth, even when it’s hard to do.  We offer them love and forgiveness, but also urging them to “Go and sin no more” just like Jesus did in the New Testament, even when it’s not “politically correct.”  If Jesus was politically correct in His day, He wouldn’t have been crucified.  We have not been called to be politically correct; we have been called to be light in a dark world.  Our job is to love people like Jesus loved people, but most importantly our command is to share truth.

Adding More Magic to the Magic Kingdom

Image

Wow…did you read my title correctly? More magic? I, for one, thought that Disney World was magical enough.  Especially the Magic Kingdom.  How is it possible that it’ll be even more magical? Well, leave it to Disney to make that happen.  As some of you may know already, the Magic Kingdom has been expanded.  They’re doing a soft open right now with other attractions to open periodically through the next year or two.

So what does this mean for the Magic Kingdom? It means a new land basically.  Disney has expanded the area and added some pretty cool new stuff.  This new stuff include the castle from Beauty and the Beast (way cool), 2 Flying Dumbo rides, a Little Mermaid dark ride, and a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs mine cart coaster.  Sounds pretty good, huh? There are a couple of downsides to this though.  Since this land is getting the new Snow White coaster, Disney decided to close down the old Snow White dark ride that was always a favorite of mine.  I guess they figured they didn’t need 2 Snow White rides.

So what do I think of all this? Well obviously anything Disney related, especially cool new rides in the theme parks, always gets me excited.  And I’m definitely excited about this new expansion…except for a few things.

First let me start with what I love about this whole thing.  I LOVE the new Beauty and the Beast castle!  It’s so iconic and from the moment you see if, you know exactly what it is.  Very cool.  Next, I absolutely love the new Little Mermaid dark ride.  I’ve always loved dark rides and created one that tells the story of the Little Mermaid is just classic Disney magic!  To be able to go under the sea and see Ariel and her friends in full animatronic form singing, talking, moving and dancing will just be amazing to.  I can’t wait for my next trip down there just to check out this ride! Disney definitely scored with this one. Why do I think this? I’ll cover this more in the next paragraph.

This leads me to talk about what I don’t love so much.  That would be the lack of new (current) films and characters being used in the park.  Like I said above, Disney scored with the Ariel ride.  The Little Mermaid is a newer movie that a whole new generation of kids can recognize.  Don’t get me wrong…I love Snow White and Dumbo and all that, but I just feel like when it comes to Disney attractions, they tend to draw a lot from the past instead of utilizing their newer titles.  This somewhat changed once Disney bought Pixar and we got a Buzz Lightyear ride.  However, what about Aladdin, Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Tarzan, and even newer, Tangled.  What about them? Where are these characters at? Well besides people in costumes walking around the park.  What I’d like to see is a Lion King attraction/ride or a Hunchback of Notre Dame dark ride.

When Disney announced earlier this year that they were going to expand the Animal Kingdom and add an Avatar Land I was dumbfounded!  Avatar? Why? Why would I want to take my kid to a land at Disney World based on a movie that contained profanity, graphic violence and Na’vi sex? Than answer? I wouldn’t.  However, I would take my kid to a Pocahontas land and since Avatar was pretty much a rip off of Pocahontas anyway it just makes more sense that Disney would do that instead.  But as I mentioned above, it seems as if they either use their older films to create their attractions, or in this case, someone elses altogether.

So to wrap up, I love Disney and their theme parks! I love that they are focusing on expanding and bringing us new and exciting things. I think they made some great decisions with their new Magic Kingdom expansion.  I wish though that maybe sometime in the future we’ll see some rides and attractions based on some more current Disney films and characters because I think they hold the key to a lot of untapped magic that could make the Magic Kingdom even more magical!

I Guess I’m a Blogger Now

I’ve had some friends who were kind of in to this whole “Blog” thing.  I never really saw the need for me to jump on board, but I’ve found myself doing a lot of writing lately.  Not just any kind of writing, but mostly taking to various social media outlets to share my thoughts and opinions on various things. So what kinds of things? Pretty much everything. From music to movies, to my opinions on various theme park attractions to even political events.  Anything that excites me at that moment and gets me thinking usually turns into some kind of writing somewhere on the net.

I also find myself having quite a bit of down time at work while I’m waiting for my next task to be assigned to me.  So I figured that I’d give this blog thing a try.  It would be nice to have a new arena to share my thoughts and if anyone wants to read them, then that’s even better!

I can guarantee one thing….my posts will be random.  I’m not sticking to any particular theme or topic, but will pretty much cover anything that I’m into at the moment.  My one hope is that my blog posts will be interesting, entertaining and maybe even informative.  So welcome to my blog and I hope you all have as much fun reading my blogs as I’ll have writing them!
